Enhancing Your Note-Taking Skills for the IELTS Exam

Note-Taking in the Listening Exam

Acing the listening exam is near impossible without taking down notes. It's why test takers are allowed to jot down notes on the test questionnaire as they listen to the recording. IELTS examiners know that most examinees won't remember the points discussed in the previous recording once the next one plays. So, don't take this advantage for granted.

Work on your note-taking skills alongside your classes at the IELTS review center in Quezon City. Start by integrating the following tips into your test strategies.

      ·         Don’t transcribe the entire audio recording. Even if you’re a fast writer, it’s impossible to jot down everything you hear. So, write only what is necessary. If the recording is of a conversation, take note of the discussion’s key points. If it’s of a monologue, jot down the main ideas and cited examples. Be selective.

      ·         Give your notes space. Otherwise, you’ll have a hard time making sense of them later. Use bullet points or write each piece of information in a single line.

      ·         Shorten everything. Condense key information into words and phrases. Replace words with symbols whenever possible to save time on writing. Use abbreviations or develop one on the spot by dropping the vowels of a long word or simply writing its first few letters. The word “dictionary,” for instance, can be shortened to “dctnry” or “dic.” Practice these strategies during your IELTS Philippines review sessions.
